Pause It: Coffy

'Pause It: Coffy'

PAUSE IT: What do you see? Dope pushers and junkies beware, it’s badass Pam Grier in director Jack Hill’s Coffy (1973). That’s right, Coffy’s coming and she’s got the business end of a large gun pointed right at her foe. Today’s modern audience might forget, but long before it was fashionable to publish think pieces on the merits of the “Strong Female Lead,” there was Ms. Grier– always fearless, confident, and determined not to take any guff from her enemies. Admired by Roger Ebert and a huge influence on the work of Quentin Tarantino, it was Ms. Grier who actually suggested that her character Coffy store her arsenal of weapons inside of her blown out 1970s afro. And the rest, as they say, was history.
