THE QUIET MAN

John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara star as one of the most beloved screen couples of all time. Sean (John Wayne) is an American boxer who swears off fighting after he accidentally kills an opponent in the ring. He purchases his childhood home in Ireland and finds happiness when when he falls in love with the fiery Kate (Maureen O’Hara). But obstacles arise with her insistence that Sean conduct his courtship in a proper Irish manner, with matchmaker Barry Fitzgerald along for the ride as “chaperone.” Another obstacle is her brother (Victor McLaglen), who spitefully refuses to give his consent to their marriage or to honor the tradition of paying a dowry to the husband.

THE DEVIL AND MISS JONES

This socially conscientious comedy is a classic, filled with sophisticated romance and hilarious twists and turns. John P. Merrick (Charles Coburn), the world’s richest man, tries to thwart the unionization of his department store by going undercover in a menial job at his own store to catch the union activists. Once he himself is subjected to the humiliating treatment by the department supervisor (Edmund Gwenn) and becomes more involved in the lives of his employees, Merrick starts to wise up — and soften up. Jean Arthur plays Mary, a shoe saleswoman who becomes Merrick’s coworker and liaison to the world of the common man. Mary is in love with the head of the union activists (Robert Cummings), while Merrick falls in love with co-worker Elizabeth (Spring Byington), setting up the beloved double-date sequence at Coney Island.

LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN

This film is a tragic and romantic masterpiece of cinema that has been unfortunately overlooked in the past. From legendary director Max Ophuls (The Earrings of Madame de…) comes this deeply moving, timeless tale of love and obsession. In early 20th century Vienna, Stefan (Louis Jordan) is in the process of fleeing the city on the eve of a duel he wants no part in. Before he can do so, however, he receives an anonymous letter from an unknown woman. Stefan is touched by what he reads and starts to realize that the author is Lisa (Joan Fontaine), a young woman he has known but disregarded for most of his life.

Available on Blu-ray and DVD.

RETURN TO ME

This film’s mixture of scenes that will make you split your sides laughing and scenes that will make you cry is what a Valentine’s Day movie should be all about. The life of Chicago architect Bob (David Duchovny) is turned upside-down when his wife, Elizabeth (Joely Richardson), is killed in a car accident. Her heart is transplanted into Grace (Minnie Driver), who has suffered from heart disease since childhood and is near death. While Grace is able to move on in her life and finally fulfill her dreams of traveling to Italy, Bob remains deeply depressed. That is, until Grace is his waitress at a restaurant where he goes on a blind date with someone else. Bob and Grace begin to date and fall in love, completely unaware of their very intense connection.

FANIE FOURIE’S LOBOLA

What happens when an Afrikaans man and a Zulu woman fall in love and have to navigate their way through the complicated traditional custom of “lobola”, or dowry? It’s a recipe for disaster explored in Fanie Fourie’s Lobola, a contemporary romantic comedy about love and tradition in a rapidly evolving society. Hilarious yet hard-hitting, the film tackles the thorny subject of cross-cultural relationships with humor and honesty. In English, Afrikaans, and Zulu with English subtitles.

Available on DVD.

SUMMER AND SMOKE

Summer and Smoke is based on a play by Tennessee Williams, expanded from his one-act piece “Eccentricities of the Nightingale.” From childhood, Alma (Geraldine Page) has loved John Buchanan (Laurence Harvey). She keeps her feelings inside, repressed by an environment ruled by a minister-father (Malcolm Atterbury) and a mother (Una Merkel) who is yet to recover from a nervous breakdown. Her life becomes unbearable when John returns from medical school and takes up with the sultry Rosa (Rita Moreno), who is as open and willing as Alma is shy and repressed. The film received four Academy Award® nominations, including Best Actress (Page), Best Supporting Actress (Merkel), Best Music, and Best Art Direction.

Available on Blu-ray and DVD.

PENNY SERENADE

The great George Stevens directs this third and final teaming of Cary Grany and Irene Dunne, which also earned Grant his first Academy Award® nomination. While listening to a recording of “Penny Serenade,” Julie Gardiner Adams (Dunne) begins reflecting on her past. She recalls her near-impulsive marriage to a newspaper reporter Roger Adams (Grant), which begins on a deliriously happy note but turns out to be fraught with tragedy. This beautiful and heartwarming masterpiece is enormously effective, balancing moments of heartbreaking pathos with uproarious laughter.

Newly re-mastered in HD. Available on Blu-ray and DVD.

The following titles will be released February 16th, but they still have plenty of romance to fulfill any post-Valentine’s Day viewing desires. You can pre-order them today!

SECRET ADMIRER

Unrequited love has never been quite so funny as it is in Secret Admirer, a romantic comedy co-written and directed by David GreenwaltUsing classic screwball comedy tropes (wisecracking friends, confused identities, romantic entanglements), Secret Admirer is the tale of Michael Ryan (C. Thomas Howell, The Outsiders) a lovesick lad who decides to send the girl of his dreams (Kelly Preston, Jerry Maguire) an anonymous letter confessing his feelings setting off a romantic comedy of errors.

Available on Blu-ray February 16.

MOONLIGHT AND VALENTINO

This romantic drama pays homage to the great “woman’s pictures” of a bygone era. Elizabeth Perkins stars as Rebecca, a woman coping with the recent death of her husband. Grieving and unable to move forward, Rebecca’s life is further complicated by her closest friends Sylvie (Whoopi Goldberg), Alberta (Kathleen Turner), and sister Lucy (Gwyneth Paltrow), whose sympathetic best intentions are overshadowed by their own personal issues. When least expected, a romantic distraction arrives in the form of a house painter (Jon Bon Jovi). This is the perfect Galentine’s Day film.

Available on Blu-ray and DVD February 16.
