“May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” -Frank Sinatra

During the filming of Young at Heart (1954), Frank Sinatra planned a surprise Birthday party for Ethel Barrymore that touched her deeply. This December 12, we’d like to take the turn to celebrate what would have been Frank’s 100th Birthday. Ol’ Blue Eyes, The Sultan of Swoon, Chairman of the Board, whatever you want to call him, his legacy as one of the greatest performers of the last century endures.

Olive Films is honored to have four Frank Sinatra films in its catalog: The Miracle of the Bells (1948), Young at Heart (1954), Come Blow Your Horn(1963), and Assault on a Queen (1966). In those four films alone, he portrays wildly different characters, but his incredible charisma shows strongly in each. From his talented but cuttingly surly musician in Young at Heart to his enterprising scubadiver-turned-pirate in Assault on a Queen, he had an ability to demand all the attention in every frame. In Come Blow Your Horn, he plays a familiar part as a gregarious, swinging bachelor-about-town. On the other end of the spectrum, his sensitive and saintly Father Paul in Miracle of the Bells is a far cry from his famous persona, but equally effective. In fact, he portrays a mild-mannered priest so compellingly that the film’s producers even received official approval from the Catholic Church to cast him.

Often remembered as a larger-than-life persona, it’s also important to remember him the way his friends knew him: a caring and generous person. Lee J. Cobb always thanked Sinatra for saving his life; the singer paid Cobb’s hospital bills after a massive heart attack, testified on his behalf in front of the HUAC, and helped him get the part in Miracle of the Bells when nobody else would hire him. No matter what your taste in films or music may be, it would be impossible to deny that Frank Sinatra was a legendary performer and a legendary man.
