PAUSE IT: What do you see? Bees! In this shot from The Deadly Bees (1966) director Freddie Francis made use of special effects to simulate the attacking swarm. Employing techniques similar to those in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds(1963), Francis superimposed footage of swarming bees over footage of his unscathed actors. To heighten the “Hives of horror!” effect, fake plastic bees were glued to the actors’ wardrobe.
