PAUSE IT: What do you see? Actor Brian Bosworth handles a giant Komodo dragon in director Craig R. Baxley’s, Stone Cold (1991). On set, between takes, the job of overseeing animals goes to the animal wrangler. The wrangler is a certified professional who is skilled in the art of both monitoring and controlling the animal talent. A job requiring an understanding of animal psychology and most of all a great deal of patients, wranglers will often times double as animal trainers. In such cases it is their job, then, to ensure that the animals can be relied upon to behave in a way the meets the needs of the script and serves the greater story. Be they dangerous or docile, it is also the wrangler’s responsibility to secure the set so that neither the animals nor their human counterparts are placed in harm’s way.
