PAUSE IT: What do you see? Brandishing a deadly weapon Deadliest Prey (2013) star Ted Prior poses before a halo of light. When it comes to the introduction of weapons on-set the person most responsible for their safe upkeep, usage, and whereabouts is called a weapons master, or armorer. Functionally, weapon masters and prop masters hold similar jobs and responsibilities. The difference between the two, however, is that a weapons master’s job requires specific knowledge and attention dedicated to weapons. Weapon masters are licensed professionals charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the weapon(s) in question does not cause harm to the cast, crew, bystanders, or properties associated with the making of a movie. In scenes involving the use of firearms, knives, and other potentially deadly devices weapon masters employ a strict code of conduct, transferring the weapon to the actor before the filming of a scene and retaking possession of the weapon immediately following the completion of the scene.
